What is WCAG Color Contrast?

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) defines minimum contrast ratios to ensure text is readable by people with visual impairments. Level AA requires 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Level AAA requires 7:1 for normal and 4.5:1 for large text. This tool calculates the ratio using the relative luminance formula from WCAG 2.1.

Why Contrast Matters

About 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women are color blind. Low contrast text can be unreadable for users with low vision. Many accessibility lawsuits cite WCAG contrast failures. This checker helps you meet compliance requirements before deploying to production.
